Truth to Nature: The Pre-Raphaelites and Scotland

This event has been cancelled by Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum.

Lecturing in Edinburgh in 1853 art critic John Ruskin declared that ‘Pre-Raphaelitism has but one principle, that of absolute, uncompromising truth in all that it does, obtained by working everything, down to the most minute detail, from nature, and from nature only.’

Join Curator of British Art Jo Meacock to explore three paintings by Scottish artists influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites’ radical new ideals about painting nature – William Dyce, William Bell Scott and John Faed. Their paintings are full of beautifully observed and rendered naturalistic detail, but with an additional depth of symbolism and meaning that will be explored, along with specifically Scottish connections.
