Maria Strutz, Classical labyrinth, 2013. Albion Millennium Green

The Labyrinth as Recollective Landscape / Take Your Body on an Ancient Journey in Albion Millennium Green

Explore the history of labyrinths – ancient integrations of nature, art, and sacred geometry – and experience the meditative art of labyrinth walking in the context of a public green space in south-east London which is also a site for experiments in place-based learning. Labyrinths differ from mazes in that they have just one winding path that leads to the labyrinth’s centre. You then follow the path back out. Four important labyrinth formations will be discussed: the Classical, Roman, Chartres, and Baltic Wheel. Albion Millennium Green’s 7-Circut Classic labyrinth was made by local artist Maria Strutz.  Since its creation, the labyrinth has existed as a site for reflection, a prompt for art and performance making, and as a silent, material steward of this small area of urban woodland.
