Taming Nature – the flora and fauna of The Glasgow Style

‘Art is the Flower – Life is the Green Leaf. Let every artist strive to make his flower a beautiful living thing, something that will convince the world that there may be, there are, things more precious, more beautiful, than life itself…’

Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Lecture – Seemliness, 1902

The study and celebration of the natural world is at the very heart of The Glasgow Style, Britain’s uniquely bold, stylised, contribution to Art Nouveau. This talk will look at the work of Mackintosh, the Macdonald Sisters, Jessie M King, Talwin Morris, Wylie & Lochhead and their many talented contemporaries. Join Alison Brown, Curator for European Decorative Art and Design 1851-present for an exploration of the abundant flora and fauna in the Mackintosh and the Glasgow Style Gallery.
