Senses and Feelings in Hogarth’s World

In this exhibition, we explore the different ways that people sensed and felt the world in the eighteenth century through William Hogarth’s paintings and engravings. Hogarth was a great chronicler of the manners of his time, and his work offers a contemporary commentary on how eighteenth-century people experienced sensations and emotions. Looking at his work today lets us think about how sensations and feelings of people in the past compare to our own and asks us to examine our own human nature.
