Making Colour
These workshops are free and open to students attending UK state schools and colleges. Only open to students aged 16-18. Booking is essential.
Join art historian Fran Herrick to discover how artists of the past made colours using materials from nature.
Journey through the Courtauld Collection and different parts of the world to explore plant, animal and mineral sources. Find out which regions had access to the best pigments and why artists were willing to use poisonous substances. See the changes brought by the invention of the metal paint tube and new synthetic colours in the nineteenth century with the Courtauld’s famous Impressionist collection.
The talk will be followed by a paint making demonstration that shows how you can build your own colour palette at home.
