Life and Liberty: American Painters and the ‘Revolution’ in Art, 1770-90
This is a free, one-room display in room 7 at Tate Britain. 250 years after the American Revolution (1775-83), this display spotlights a group of American painters in London who led a parallel ‘revolution’ in art. Uniting major works by Benjamin West, John Singleton Copley, and Gilbert Stuart, the display explores their profound impact on British painting of the eighteenth century.
