Exeter’s fine art collection: a feast for the eyes

Food is essential to our survival and can be one of our greatest pleasures. Since the earliest cave paintings of hunting scenes, some 43,000 years ago, artists have depicted our relationship with food. They explore how it shapes daily routines, livelihoods and landscapes.

Visitors will explore a selection of over 30 prints, paintings, photographs and sketches from the Fine Art collections at RAMM. They record how food has transformed the countryside, influenced the development of towns and played a central role in genres such as still life and botanical art.

Works by local artists such as Alan Richards, Isabel Codrington, Beryl Newman and Peter Randall-Page are accompanied by nationally and internationally renowned artists such as William Hogarth, Lucien Pissarro and Jack Knox.
