Jean-François Millet, The Winnower, about 1847-8. National Gallery, London.

Curator’s Introduction to the National Gallery’s exhibition ‘Millet: Life on the Land’

Sarah Herring, Associate Curator of Post-1800 Paintings, introduces the National Gallery’s free exhibition Millet: Life on the Land, which includes some of Millet’s best-loved paintings and drawings.

Born into a farming family in Normandy, Millet moved to the village of Barbizon in 1849, where he put the people who spent their lives working on the land at the heart of his work. Depicting working people in 19th-century rural France with realism and dignity, Millet inspired Impressionists and Post-Impressionists from Vincent van Gogh to Edgar Degas with his work.

Join the exhibition’s curator as she introduces its themes, paintings and explores the beauty and quiet power of Millet’s work.
