Maritime Heritage Trail
The Maritime Heritage Trail celebrates the Yachting History of Cowes as depicted in a wide range of paintings. There are historical maritime paintings in the Sir Max Aitken Museum, such as ‘The Departure from Gravesend of HRH Princess Royal on Her Marriage’ by Richard Henry Nibbs. This work captures the 1858 departure of Princess Victoria (daughter of Queen Victoria) during a snowstorm as she traveled to marry Prince Frederick of Prussia. The Royal Ocean Racing Club has a recently restored rendering of Prince Philip’s yacht ‘Bloodhound’ by Charles Bryant. The trail also allows for an appreciation of the industrial history of Cowes in contemporary works such as Anna Keen’s, ‘The Cowes Hammerhead Crane,’ 2023 (depicted here) on view at the Classic Boat Museum.
